Preliminary evidence of syllable locked temporal control of F0

چکیده

The temporal organization of the Fo contour in Swedish words with the grave accent (accent 11) has been investigated. Consonants and consonant c lus te rs of different length and complexity (from r b ] to [ r3 s t s p 1 ] were inserted between the two syllable kerne ls of com p a n d disyllabic nonsense words and the effect of the resulting tempor a l perturbations on the Fo contour of the second vowel, i.e. the vowe l in the syllable with the acute tone, was then studied. It was found that increased distance between the two vowel onsets, brought about by increased medial cluster length resulted in a reorganization of the Fo contour. The character is t ic r is ing contour in the second syllable was generally observed in the vowel segment even for words containing the mos t complex consonant c lus te rs , although delayed in t ime with reference to the onset of the f i r s t vowel. It i s suggested that the underlying rule i s to synchronize the supraglottal events of a given syllable with its Fo variation. In synthesis by-rule applications a standard, invariant Fo contour may be used for the acute accented syllable in grave accented words.

Word segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour

Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...

Relationship between speech-evoked neural responses and perception of speech in noise in older adults.

Speech-in-noise (SPIN) perception involves neural encoding of temporal acoustic cues. Cues include temporal fine structure (TFS) and envelopes that modulate at syllable (Slow-rate ENV) and fundamental frequency (F0-rate ENV) rates. Here the relationship between speech-evoked neural responses to these cues and SPIN perception was investigated in older adults. Theta-band phase-locking values (PLV...

Organizing syllables into groups - Evidence from F0 and duration patterns in Mandarin

In this study we investigated grouping-related F0 patterns in Mandarin by examining the effect of syllable position in a group while controlling for tone, speaking mode, number of syllables in a group, and group position in a sentence. We analyzed syllable duration, F0 displacement, ratio of peak velocity to F0 displacement (vp/d ratio) and shape of F0 velocity profile (parameter C) in sequence...

The influence of vowel quality and temporal organization of pitch ac

The main goal of this study is to test the temporal organization of pitch accent realization in the context of two different vowels, hypothesizing that intrinsic duration does not have an effect. Secondly, temporal organization is tested on different syllable structures with decreasing voicing time, showing that the same pattern of temporal organization can be found on different syllable struct...

A Study of Syllable Timing and “ Stress ” in Malay Authors

Duration and F0 were studied in a set of 111 Malay words produced by two female native speakers of Malay in order to identify the citation pattern. This preliminary study seemed to provide strong evidence for penultimate stress. Seen in a wider context, the evidence collapsed, and it became clear that Malay does not have word stress at all. The search for syllable timing led to doubts whether t...
